Today, the support for children and young people who have been victims of sexual violence is lacking. What enhancements can be done to upgrade the support system to meet their needs? This was the question that ChildX and five other non-profit organizations brought to Antrop. They now have the answer.

Unfortunately, sexual violence is a bigger problem than what is reflected in crime statistics. One in four students in the third year of high school has experienced a sexual assault, but for many, this concealed truth causes discomfort and impairs their trust in others. When Antrop mapped the support system to find the gaps and areas of improvement, it was important to have the perspective of children and youth as the basis for the work.
To understand the path of children and youth into and within the support system, we used a combination of quantitative and qualitative research, a survey with over 200 respondents, and 10 in-depth interviews with young people who have been victims of sexual violence. The result was a mapping with both breadth and depth and an understanding of obstacles and behaviors. We also captured young people’s own ideas about how we can create a better support system.
There is much that can be improved in today’s support system, both among public and non-profit actors. The point of doing a system mapping is that it identifies key areas where a relatively small action can make a huge difference. The system mapping resulted in eight key areas, what we called leverage points, of which we prioritized four, based on the non-profit organizations’ ability to influence them.
Rarely is one strong when alone, and this holds even more true in the context of systemic change. To foster collaboration, we brought together representatives from both the non-profit and public support sectors in a joint workshop designed for co-creation. This approach led to the validation and enhancement of our key focus areas, elevated the prioritization of ideas from young people, and importantly, facilitated valuable cross-boundary networking.
